Deep winter in Southern Appalachia is a bleak time. Days are short and gloomy, and the wind cuts cold. There’s rarely snow, but the rain, sleet, and ice more than make up for it. Game is scarce, and edible plants are even scarcer. Or are they? The ancient tribes that thrived for millennia in these hollers and hills, and the settlers that followed them, sure didn’t seem to think so. They just knew where to look. And in this 1-day course, that’s exactly what you’ll learn. Join instructors Philip Winter and Alexander Bryant as they show you how to locate, identify, and utilize a wide variety of edible and medicinal trees, herbs, and mushrooms at a time of year when many give up even trying to. The practical importance of this skill set hardly even needs to be said – this could truly save your life in a cold-weather survival situation. Hunting and trapping are vital, but it’s wild plants that’ll keep you alive and fed while you work to find game. And even if that’s a spot you never find yourself in, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the winter woods and those who thrived in them for generations. This is a hard skillset to come by, so don’t miss your opportunity!
