The Cherokee believed that every plant in the forest served a purpose. And for centuries, they utilized the trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, and forbs of the Eastern Woodlands to not only survive, but thrive. Those traditions were passed down through the generations by tribal medicine men to their descendants, who shared them with American pioneers. Their ensuing generations would become the traditional Southern herbalists – folk healers and foragers who had an almost supernatural ability to use native plants to meet their every need. And it’s their knowledge that we’ll be passing down to you in our wildly popular Wild Edible Essentials course. With a joint focus on both modern botanical science and traditional folk wisdom, we’ll spend most of this course on a day-long walkabout of our 70-acre property showing you the habitat, growth habits, and uses of dozens of native plants. We’ll finish up by adjourning to camp to show you firsthand how to make a variety of infusions, decoctions, poultices, and other recipes. The ability to utilize the plants that surround you to feed and heal yourself is one of the most critically important skills in the woodsman’s toolbox.
