A twice-monthly, family-friendly workshop covering a wide array of wilderness skills.

Back in 1966, a Swede named Ake Nordin perfected a simple weatherproofing wax blend for a Swedish research mission to study Greenland’s glaciers. Combined with the right blend of fabric, he revolutionized the outdoor clothing industry and founded a famous soft goods company…. If you know, you know. But back to that wax. Although Nordin’s Greenland Wax is its highest evolution, folks have been using wax to waterproof fabric for ages. A durable waxed canvas oilskin jacket was a must-have for any American frontiersman or sailor on the frozen seas. Even today, waxed canvas is the material of choice for outdoor goods that need to outlast just about everything else.

In this half-day course, you’ll learn how to do it yourself in a two-part process. In part one, instructor Mike Simmons will show you the secrets of making your very own Greenland Wax, exactly like the Swedish National Research Team used. This bar of wax will last for dozens of applications, and has a myriad of other uses as well. In part two, you’ll be shown just how to use it. If you have your own canvas or G-1000 goods you’d like to waterproof, bring them. If not, we’ll have projects for you to work on and take home with you. If you’ve ever been cold and wet in the woods (who hasn’t?), then you understand the importance of keeping your clothing dry. Join us to learn how to do it the time-tested way.
