Hunting was the lifeblood of our ancient ancestors. Sure, we foraged for wild plants, scavenged what we could find, and eventually settled down to grow crops, but taking game to feed the tribe is what drove us, shaped us, made us who we are. We developed all manner of technologies for hunting various types and sizes of animals, from spears and atlatls to bows and arrows. But there’s one that’s almost as widespread as these others, but seems far less appreciated and known in the modern era: The blowgun. Quiet, stealthy, and lethal against small game, this simple tube and dart is still used by numerous tribes in wilderness areas throughout the world, notably the Amazon. In North America, the Cherokee probably refined the design the best, and that’s who we’re learning from in this 1-day course, taught by ancestral skills expert and Discovery Channel star Kau’i Morehead. You’ll learn every step of the process and make your own blowgun just like the ancients did, from selecting the perfect piece of cane to hollowing it out to making your darts. We’ll conclude the day with a marksmanship contest to see who’s mastered their new weapon, with an awesome prize for the winner!
