Let’s go back. Way, way back. Back before there were cities, the written word, or even the wheel. Long before we humans grew crops and raised livestock… we hunted. We built weapons and traps from the materials around us, and used our brainpower to put us on level footing with the prey we tracked and the predators we feared. In this 1-day course, come touch the distant past with us as we learn about the essentials of primitive hunting. Our guest instructor, Kau’i Morehead, will teach you the ancient ways of building and using an atlatl – a lethally effective weapon which pre-dates the bow & arrow by thousands of years. You’ll get hands-on experience with the process from start to finish – from picking out and cutting the perfect tree to honing your skills with the weapon you just made. You’ll also learn how to make a variety of time-tested traps, such as the classic figure-4 deadfall, small-game snares, and the deadly Spanish Windlass. We’ll discuss which traps work best for which game in which situations, how to deploy them effectively, and how to avoid common mistakes when building them. Finally, we’ll discuss animal behavior and tracking, and how to put meat on the campfire when it really counts.

About Kau’ilani “Kau’i” Morehead:
Kau’i Morehead was born and raised on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. He has been proficient in hand-to-hand combatives and mixed martial arts since the age of 9, and was raised with his ancestor’s knowledge of how to live off the land. At age 18, he moved to the mainland and later received his calling to “teach the ancestral skills and live for the Lord,” in his own words. He is a star of Discovery Channel’s Bushcraft Build-Off and works as an instructor for Flint & Steel Critical Skills Group, a nationwide collective of outdoor professionals. He currently resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
